Description
Very similar to Acanthus hungaricus in appearance and hardiness, except that the A. spinosus has glossy green foliage that is spiny, and thistle-like, and on mature plants, 2-3′ in length. 3-4′ stalks bear hooded mauve and white flowers in summer. Here in MA, we grow Acanthus in a sunny well drained soil. It takes a couple of years to establish but once it does it can colonize a space. Deer resistant and Bees love it!
