Description
Orange Milkweed is a native Butterfly Weed that has a wide range of distribution, but note that it is particular to fast draining and lean soil. Slow to establish as it develops a deep tap root, but plants are long lived and will naturalize if grown in the lean dry soil it prefers. Clusters of orange flowers are produced on 18-30″ stems in midsummer. The blossoms are a nectar source for adult butterflies and its foliage is devoured by Monarch larvae. Note: this Asclepias breaks dormancy later in the spring so be sure you mark where you plant it.
