Yunnan Licorice. Our friends Elin and Lasse brought this plant to our attention when they discovered it in a Dutch garden and sent us a photo to ID. I’ll admit at first I was stumped, but then realized I had earmarked this in a Garden’s Illustrated Magazine issue a couple of years ago. It has fern-like pinnate leaves and curious lavender pink flower heads on 3-4′ stems that are even more interesting on plants as they age and dry in winter. Not sure how tasty it is, but I read it does have medicinal purposes and is used as a tea. Pollinator friendly, for sure.
